Por versus Para

Both por and para are used to express the word "for" 
in english.  More specifically use POR to express...

way or means, duration, per, along, through, by,
motive, in exchange for

For example

Gracias por su ayuda. (always use por after gracias)
Estamos nadando por el rio.
Tome la pastilla por la boca.
Tengo que trabajar por cinco horas el viernes.

Use PARA to express...

purpose, use, intention, in order to, end, destination

For example

Estudio espaņol para hablar con mis parientes.
Vamos para el cine.
La medicacion es para el dolor.
Son cinco para las tres. (Time: It is five to three.)

When describing work, use por to describe why one is
working

Yo trabajo por mis hijos.
I am working for my children (to help pay for them)

use para to describe who one works for.

Yo trabajo por Apple.
I work for Apple (name of a firm).
